About Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus stands over Lake Lucerne, and its summit station at 2,132 metres has been reached by the steepest cogwheel railway in the world since 1889. From the other side, panorama gondolas and a cableway climb from Kriens on the edge of the city. At the top wait the peaks, a path through the rock and a hotel opened in 1890. Things to Do on the Summit

Climb the Oberhaupt in about 10 minutes or the Esel in about 30, walk the Dragon Path through the rock in about 20, and let children loose in Dragon World, which is free. Lower down, Fräkmüntegg has a rope park and the Fräkigaudi, at 1,350 metres the longest summer toboggan run in Switzerland.

The Loop from Lucerne

The classic day is a loop: the boat to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel up, then the cableway and the panorama gondola down to Kriens and bus 1 back, or the same in reverse. The railway sells it as the Golden Round Trip, and it runs only while the boat, the cogwheel and the cableway all operate: in 2026, until 18 October.

Planning Your Visit

Pick a clear day and judge it by the summit forecast rather than the sky over Lucerne, because autumn fog often sits low in the valley. Book a cogwheel seat if your ticket leaves it out, bring a warm layer, and allow two to three hours at the top for a meal, a peak and the path through the rock.

Bus 1 from Lucerne station reaches Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus in about 12 minutes, and the train to Alpnachstad takes 16. From Zurich the train to Lucerne takes 41 minutes. On the days it runs, the first panorama gondola leaves Kriens at 08:30, and the ride from Kriens to the summit takes around 40 minutes.

How to get there

Mount Pilatus ticket prices in 2026 start at CHF 84 for a return from Kriens or Alpnachstad, and the loop with the boat costs CHF 119.80 in second class. A Half Fare Card or the Swiss Travel Pass halves the mountain fare, and children aged 6 to 15 pay half. Mount Pilatus booking works in two steps on the railway's own tickets: buy the fare, then make your Mount Pilatus reservation for a cogwheel seat, which is recommended but not obligatory.

Compare the fares

The cogwheel railway runs from 11 May to 29 November 2026, and the boat to Alpnachstad stops on 18 October. The Kriens gondola and cableway close for maintenance from 19 October to 27 November, so in that window you ride the cogwheel up and down. From 30 November the mountain is reached from Kriens only.

Do You Need a Tour to Ride Up Mount Pilatus?

Not to ride up. The railway company sells its tickets at the valley-station box offices, SBB online tickets scan straight at the turnstile, and the loop from Lucerne is also bookable here at $144. The Swiss Travel Pass carries you free on the boat, the train and the bus and halves the mountain fare; a Half Fare Card halves it too.

A tour earns its fare in three places: a guide who handles every change, the transport from Zurich or Basel, and a day timed around the boat and the cogwheel. If you are in Lucerne and happy to follow the signs, the railway's own ticket does the job; book the recommended cogwheel seat once you hold it.

How much does a Mount Pilatus tour cost?

The railway's own round-trip tickets run from $72 to $144 per person. Guided days from Lucerne start at $154, the coach day from Zurich is $207, and private days start at $678 per person.

What is the Golden Round Trip?

The Golden Round Trip is the railway company's loop from Lucerne: the boat to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up, then the Dragon Ride cableway and the panorama gondola down to Kriens, and bus 1 back. You can ride it in either direction, and in 2026 it costs CHF 119.80 in second class.

Do I need a seat reservation for the cogwheel railway?

It is not obligatory, but the railway company recommends one, and without it you may wait for a later railcar on busy days. The self-guided tickets leave it out, so book a seat for a set time once you have your ticket. You can move the slot up to 30 minutes before departure, but you cannot cancel it.

Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover Mount Pilatus?

No. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the boat, the train and the bus on the loop and gives 50% off the mountain, so you buy only the return over it: CHF 42 in 2026 instead of CHF 84. With a Half Fare Card the whole Golden Round Trip costs CHF 59.90.

Is Mount Pilatus open in winter?

The Kriens side is: the panorama gondola and the Dragon Ride run all year except for maintenance. The cogwheel railway runs only from 11 May to 29 November 2026, so from 30 November you go up and down from Kriens.

When is the Kriens cableway closed in 2026?

On 30 and 31 March, and from 19 October to 27 November 2026, for maintenance. In that window the summit is reached only by the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, up and down.

When does the boat to Alpnachstad stop running?

The Lucerne to Alpnachstad boat ends its season on 18 October 2026. From 19 October the guided half-days and the Zurich coach day go up and down by cogwheel instead, with a CHF 20 lunch voucher in place of the cruise.

How high is Mount Pilatus?

The railway gives Pilatus Kulm, the summit station, as 2,132 metres, an older published figure it still uses. Surveyed, the highest peak is the Tomlishorn, at about 2,128 metres and a short walk from the station.

How long do you need at the top?

Two to three hours is enough for a meal, one of the peaks and the Dragon Path. The guided half-days from Lucerne give about 1 hour 30 minutes of free time, and the whole loop on your own takes about 4 hours 30 minutes.

How do you get to the valley stations from Lucerne?

Take bus 1 from the railway station to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus (about 12 minutes) and walk up to the gondola. For the cogwheel, take the train to Alpnachstad (16 minutes) or the boat from the quay in front of the station.

Can you visit Mount Pilatus from Zurich in a day?

Yes. The train reaches Lucerne in 41 minutes, and a guided coach day from the Sihlquai bus station takes 10 hours, with about an hour in Lucerne and 1 hour 30 minutes at the top.

Is it the steepest cogwheel railway in the world?

Yes. The line from Alpnachstad climbs at up to 48 per cent, and it has run since 1889. The ride takes 27 minutes up and 33 minutes down.

Which way round is best?

Boat first, then the cogwheel up, works best for most: the boats run less often, so you can book a cogwheel seat that fits your crossing. Coming down by gondola also makes the walk to the bus in Kriens a downhill one.

Can I cancel a Mount Pilatus tour?

All the day trips and tickets refund in full up to 24 hours before the start. The three-day private tour from Lucerne refunds in full only up to 6 days before.

Is a guide with you on the summit?

On the private days and the small groups, yes. On the guided coach days the guide rides up with you and the time at the top is free time, and the railway's own tickets are unguided.

Hours

The lifts run to a seasonal timetable: the first gondola leaves Kriens at 08:30, and the first cogwheel leaves Alpnachstad at 08:10 until 24 October 2026. Check the last ride down for your date before you go up.

Getting there

Bus 1 runs from Lucerne station to Kriens in about 12 minutes, and the train to Alpnachstad takes 16. Every route is on getting to Mount Pilatus.
